Mobile Game Art
I spent 4 years at Mobilityware on their casino suite team developing artwork for Vegas BLVD Slots. The following illustrations and animations are some of the machines I worked on. My responsibilities involved creating characters, symbols, frames, reel strips, backgrounds, title logo treatments, lobby tiles, and some UI assets. When creating the artwork, I had to keep in mind hierarchy between the symbols, from royals and pic symbols to wild and bonus symbols. I had to make sure they could easily be distinguished from the background while maintaining the theme as a whole. I also had to make sure the layers were clean and organized so that the textures were as optimized as possible on the texture sheets. I would then animate the symbols and characters using the program Spine by Esoteric. My team chose to use Spine to save on texture space instead of animating each frame by itself. This allowed us to have different animation sequences without making our game heavier than needed to be. While painting the characters, I kept in mind what pose would be easiest to manipulate after separating the layers for animating. Each layer is named, even down to the eyelids, irises, and shadows. In the case where I receive flattened artwork (last theme example) from a contractor, I would cut it up and paint behind each asset (ie: behind arms, torso, neck, eyes, etc.) in order to prep for animation.
The following theme is an example of artwork from a contractor that I color adjusted, split up, and animated.
